Last night I saw avatar with a mate (Al) and my Dad in London's Imax, the biggest screen in the UK. When talking about this film you have to separate the effects, 3D and CGI from the plot and acting. There is no question this is ground breaking stuff, throughout the film you watch as if analysing a work of art exploring the screen, the flies in the jungle buzzing in front of your eyes, leaves brushing past your face. At certain moments, a creature scuttles past you and the camera focuses on it - utterly stunning. When the battle finally comes, your senses are overloaded through images and sounds. It is so hard to put into words but it is mouth dropping to experience. 3D aside the CGI is a level above anything before it. The skin of the aliens, the creatures, the exotic and wonderful flowers. In that sense, perhaps it is a work of art.
When it came to the actual plot, I enjoyed it but it wasn't as gripping as say Titanic, or indeed Star Wars. Characters were very cartoonish which was fine, but it didn't draw me in as much as I hoped. Having said that it did for Dad I and guess it's different for everyone.
Dad said after he thought it was the Star Wars of this generation, and to a point I agree. Nothing has been done like this before, and the 3D surpassed even my wildest expectations. Like Star Wars, the effects will become standard stuff but Avatar will always be remembered as the film that did it first in such a spectacular way. The story is no way as deep or operatic as star wars, so I doubt it will become legendary but who knows.
Either way, you will do yourself a huge injustice if you don't watch Avatar on the big screen in 3D. Just sit back and let your eyes do the talking!

Why everyone should 'see' Avatar in 3D - the Star Wars of our generation?
