To twitter or not to twitter, that is my question
I never really got twitter, that is until now. Facebook is for family and friends. LinkedIn is for work or job hunting when the time comes round (normally every few years!). So where does twitter fit in, and what the hell is it?
Imagine Facebook, without all the bells and whistles - just the status update. Now take away the security of being able to choose who can see you, and who you can see. Welcome to twitter! On the face of it, that is absolutely crazy - but start using it and you see where the addiction lies.
I use it specifically for work, it enables to me to keep an eye on customers, trade publications and competitors in a way that wasn't possible before. For example a customer posted a 'tweet' that he was evaluating our product in conjunction with another part of his infrastructure. I could pass his requests to R&D, and get back to him with a solution to his requirement the same day!
Twitter is great for 'following' things. Whether a person (celebrity, pop star) or a topic or issue. All this is possible, but the beauty is you are limited to 140 characters. This is where your blog comes in i.e. this site!
Going a bit deeper, there is a change afoot in social culture that most people are just not getting. We are flying at a million Miles per hour towards an always online and connected society. Sure right now it's a bit rough and ready, and isn't always easy to use. It can take too long to find the answer to your question but it will come. We come from an age where privacy is the norm, and we are uncomfortable about it being compromised. That has changed and will further, till knowing what your friends and family are up to isn't cool and unusual - it will be part of life. I fully expect to see my child's life in a way that my parents could only dream of. I'll know their happiness, what they are up to. the good things they do, the bad things. The test will be not to judge or ask questions.
Nearly all my friends who were anti-facebook are now users, some of them more use it more than me! You can keep fighting the tide, but it will win. And when in our life time, social networks get integrated with our bodies. When I will literally feel if my wife is happy or not (is that good!?) remember you heard it here first!

Hello, not satisfied with facebook, linkedin, twitter, hotmail, skype, MSN etc etc I have decided to start one more thing that can waste valuable time.
So if you are extremely bored, and have tried every other source of amusement, you can always pop by....
